Reclaiming the 7 Mountains of Cultural Influence

Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD’s house

shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. —ISAIAH 2:2

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.

— PROVERBS 29:2

There are 7 Cultural Mountains of Greatest Influence

In 1975, Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade, and Loren Cunningham, founder of

Youth With a Mission, had lunch together in Colorado. God simultaneously gave each of

these change agents a message to give to the other. During that same timeframe, Francis

Schaeffer, founder of L’Abri, and Pat Robertson of Regent University and the Christian

Broadcasting Network were given a similar message. That message was that if we are to

impact any nation for Jesus Christ, then we will have to effect the seven spheres, or

mountains of society, that are the pillars of any society. These seven mountains are

business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family, and religion.

There are many subgroups under these main categories. In essence, God was telling these

four change agents where the battlefield was. It was here where culture would be won or

lost. Their assignment was to raise up change agents to scale the mountains to “establish heaven on earth” in these mountains of influence. During the last fifteen years, God has been igniting men and women to see their work lives as holy calling from God. They have begun to realize the spiritual calling

upon their lives. The message of the seven mountains has begun to re-emerge through many leaders worldwide simultaneously, many not knowing one another. We believe the Holy Spirit is behind this rebirth for this present time.

More Salvations Does Not Result in a Changed Culture.

The evangelical church has operated on a flawed premise as to what will impact our cultures spiritually. We have held a view that says the more people we win to Christ the more spiritual the culture will become. This has not proven true. Several countries can boast a large percentage of their population being followers of Christ, but these same nations are losing the cultural war. That is because culture is defined by a relatively small number of change agents who operate at the tops of these cultural mountains. Research reveals that it takes less than 3–5 percent of those operating at the tops of a cultural mountain to actually shift the values represented on that mountain.

This is exactly what the gay rights movement has done in the U.S. through the mountain of media and arts and entertainment. A high ranking media professional from one of the top 3 TV networks revealed that less than 100 people control the entire media in America. Through the effective use of media and arts and entertainment the gay rights movement has gradually legitimized their cause by controlling these two cultural mountains.

Those at the tops of these mountains are expressing a worldview which results in

influence for their worldview which is often contrary to God’s view. The more liberal and ungodly the change agents at the top, the more liberal and ungodly the culture. The more godly the change agent at the top, the more righteous the culture will be. It doesn’t matter if the majority of the culture is made up of Christians. It only matters who has the greatest influence over that cultural mountain.

Prayer and Repentance Focus

One of the primary reasons we are losing culture is due to our own disobedience among God’s people. Humility and prosperity often do not coexist. The more prosperous a nation, the less dependency there is upon God. We gave up dominion when Adam and Eve fell, and we have failed to reclaim it because of our own sins of self-satisfaction and complacency toward God. Our enemies didn’t have to kill us; we simply disobeyed God, which entitled our enemies to take our mountains. God gave His requirements through the nation of Israel, which can be applied to every nation on earth. "Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers.”

- Deut 8:1-2

"And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.” - Deut 8:18-20

However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.” —DEUTERONOMY 28:15–19

We have entitled our enemies to take our mountains because of our own disobedience.

God’s instruction to us to regain His favor is very clear:

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and

seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and

will forgive their sin and heal their land.” —2 CHRONICLES 7:14

Relativism

Another major trend we have seen develop in our nations is the move toward

relativism. Relativism means there are no absolutes. Today’s mantra goes like this:

“Whatever feels good to you and does not impose your views on others is good.”

No one wants to offend anyone else. Consequently we have a whole new generation who don’t want to offend anyone by implying there really is a right and wrong way to do something, and unwilling to stand upon convictions that might be rooted in a moral faith. This is why we have a leadership vacuum in our nations.

Those who would have the audacity to say that Jesus is the way are now considered rigid and backward for a modern and progressive society, because of the obvious diversity of faiths and ethnicity held by so many in our post-modern society. Yet, the Bible warns us that: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” - Proverbs 14:12

Prayer Points:

· Repent of our disobedience as a people. 2 Chron 7:14

· Pray for leaders who currently rule at the tops of each of the cultural mountains in your nation to be saved or be replaced with righteous leaders.

· Ask God to raise up a new generation of leaders who will operate at the tops of these 7 mountains in your nation.

· Pray for trainers in your nation to be raised up for marketplace leaders within the 7 mountain domains.

· Pray for pastors and church leaders to validate their marketplace leaders in their congregations as men and women who have a holy calling to influence culture through their marketplace calling by training them, supporting them and releasing them.

· Pray for believers to live based on truth, not relativism.
